(21)    Don’t compete with anyone other than yourself

Congratulations!  You have decided to propose marriage to your mate and are getting everything ready to set the stage for a grand event.  Now, I will stop you to ask the question of whose expectations are you working toward?  If you say that it is for you and your mate - GREAT!  If you are trying to outdo a family member, friend, or trying to impress someone other than your mate - STOP!  This is a very special and intimate moment for the both of you and should not be a place that you try to compete with anyone other than yourself.  You should use this opportunity to create the best marriage proposal that YOU can possibly do.  Whether this be an elaborate event or just a very quaint, intimate moment; the objective is to make a special memory for the two of you.

When you take this as an opportunity to outshine others, you do both yourself and your mate a disservice. You will lose focus and begin to do things that may distract from the real reason that you are creating this moment - you are attempting to create a lasting impression and provide a true expression of your love in moving forward with your lives together.  Anything that is done just for show will not add value in the eyes of your mate and may only become a distraction.  Therefore, you should not try to make the largest spectacle as much as you make the largest impression on your mate.

This does not mean that you cannot go “all-out” to create a very memorable and fantastic showing.  It simply means that you should not do so just to outdo or one-up someone else.  If you do everything in your power to put for the thoughtfulness and create a planned, intimately touching proposal - she will absolutely love it.  This love will not come from how extravagant, but how much she knows that you put into the event.  As long as you feel that you have done YOUR best in the proposal, you will have no regrets and neither should she.
